CHATEAU RAUZAN SEGLA
This 66-hectare property was once part of a much larger holding that existed in the mid-17th Century. By the time of the 1855 Classification it had been carved up into four pieces that included Rauzan-Ségla, thanks to some "family issues" (we all know that story, don’t we?).
This is Second Growth status, and supposedly once a favourite tipple of Thomas Jefferson. Yes, that one. Chanel took charge in 1994. They put John Kolasa in charge as Managing Director, which turned out to be a very good move. Sustainable practices, plot by plot management, hand harvesting and double sorting prior to fermentation have all contributed to an elevation in quality.
The gravel-based soils are planted in 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and 1.5% apiece of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This is a Margaux designed to age gracefully – rich, tannic and harmonious, and with great concentration. The wines are not made for early drinking. The recent vintages are amongst the finest wines in the estate’s history.
